That is exactly what I am hearing right now. I’m in AsianAm101 — some globalization & diaspora class. And OMFG it is boring! Well the readings are pretty interesting but the professor talks really fast & looks/sounds like Apu from the Simpsons. His lectures are 90% rhetorical questions so I don’t really know what I am supposed to get out of the material. I guess I’ll have to rely on discussions to pass this class. That’s what I’m doing for stats. I go to tutoring instead of lectures & I got an A- on my first quiz =D
Anyways, Monday was annoying. I started walking to campus around 4:30pm to attend the Living Abroad orientation. Approximately 1/3 way there (the crappy movie theatre in UTC) this creepy white guy started following me. He proceeded to ask me if I was a student even though my sweater said “UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA IRVINE” in bold print. I said yes & continued to listen to my IPod (which I had on the entire time to begin with). He then asked if I was Chinese. I said yes. Then he proceeded to ramble on about the Chinese language to me. So I said I don’t know a lot of Chinese, I speak more Vietnamese. He then started speaking Vietnamese to me. At this point, I was pretty creeped out so I said I had to go make copies & tried to walk the other way. He said “Oh I’ll go with you!” I gave up & started walking towards to bridge towards campus. He continued to follow & tried to teach me Chinese the whole way, breaking down the grammar & asking me to repeat words that he’s said.
During that whole time, I was still listening to my IPod hoping that the creep would take a hint & leave me alone. I mean, how the hell am I supposed to fully appreciate the sounds of Trish Thuy Trang when there’s some bitch lecturing me about how I need to learn Chinese?!!!!!?!!! So right when I get to the library parking/circle drop-off, I turned left to walk through the parking lot to get to ring road. Out of nowhere, he was like “YOU’RE GOING THE WRONG WAY! WE’RE GOING THIS WAY! Excuse me? Since when did someone else have the right to tell which way to go when I get to school? So bottling up my anger/annoyance, I said I have to go this way for orientation. He then said “Okay I’ll let you go if you repeat the Chinese words I just taught you” WTF? I started walking off but he kept yelling “Come on, say it!” Yup, UCI is a creepy place.
I need pepper spray. I was just really annoyed (I’m not even PMSing) that a random stranger was lecturing me. I wasn’t being anti-social or anything, this dude looked like he was 35. But I’m improving? I didn’t publicly lash out in his face or anything. But if I run into him again, I’m just going to say “NO ENGLISH!” & run away.
Good thing Living Abroad orientation was fun & cheered me up after that run-in with the creep. It was 2 hours of icebreakers that were supposed to teach us ‘lessons’ about living abroad. I liked the customs & norms icebreaker. The “outsider” had to figure out our country’s norm by asking questions. Our norm was “if they asked a question smiling, we’d have to say yes. If they asked it normally or frustrated, we say no.” I think our group was a bit conflicted when the outsider girl asked (smiling) “ARE YOU A MAN?” Uhhhh… yes
Wednesday was “EAP Summer Korea” orientation. It was somewhat helpful. Of course it was also a great time to freak out because DMCville housing was full. Silvia & I are dorming @ IHouse I guess… well, it’s not like we have any other choice. But I am reconsidering my arrival date now. I’m booked to arrive right on the 25th @ 11am. But now I want to arrive on the 22nd or 23rd. Providing I find a decently-priced hotel room (or love motel lol!) & people to hang out with, it should be fun. I was standing around with some people after orientation & someone mentioned we should go there a few days earlier to build up our soju tolerance XD But exploring the city & relaxing before classes sounds like a good idea. I will check with my travel agency regarding a flight change this weekend. Life is short, might as well have some fun this summer.
