Location: Dajeon, South Korea (Timeworld Galleria area)
How to Get There: Take a taxi to Timeworld Galleria Department Store. Walk down the street past the 2-story Daiso. Cross the street and continue walking down until you see Snow Spoon on your right. It is located on the 1st floor next to a traditional clothing (hanbok) store.
One of the things that Korea lacks is self-serve frozen yogurt establishments. Since the craze came to California in 2006, I was under the impression that idea came from Korea. Therefore, shouldn’t Korea be filled with them? WRONG. Red Mango is found all over Seoul but it isn’t self-serve. I saw Snow Spoon in the summer of 2011 in Hongdae and was glad to see it make its way to Daejeon this past February. I finally had the chance to try out this place last weekend with my friend Asuncion.
The place looked like a hospital. A very sterile hospital… the workers wore mouth guards, which I did not understand. Are you more likely to spit when you are around yogurt? I don’t see anyone wearing mouth guards Baskin Robbins… Anyways, there were about 10 flavors of frozen yogurt. You pick out a cup size and fill it up with any flavor your taste buds desire. Then you move onto the topping bar. I chose to top my yogurt (plain & green tea) with some white chocolate shavings, mochi, kiwi, peaches, & peanuts. After placing my cup onto the scale, I saw that my bill came out to be around 6,700won. That roughly translates into about $6.30 USD… not bad. That’s how much I usually pay for a typical cup of self-served yogurt at home.
The taste is pretty much spot on with what I would normally expect with frozen yogurt. Nothing terrible, but nothing spectacular. It’s just another comfort food that reminds me of home. Which was exactly what I was looking for when I came to Snow Spoon. The seats were slight uncomfortable though. Or maybe my butt is just big haha. Anyways, I am happy with this place. I will be back when I am in the area.
PS – Snow Spoon (in Dajeon at least) also serves pre-made ice cream sandwiches. I didn’t try one since I was so full but they looked really good.
