Location: Daejeon (Dunsan-dong, a few steps from Rodeo Town)
How to Get There: Take the subway to City Hall Station, take Exit 8. Walk down straight down the street until you reach the Artnoveau Building. Once there, turn left and keep walking until you see Dasarang Chicken & Pizza on your right. Turn right into that alley and walk about 10 steps until you see a Shabu Shabu place on your left. There will be a big banner advertising budaejjigae (부대찌개) out front for the sensible price of 6,500won.
Budae-jjigae (부대찌개) is hands down, one of my favorite Korean meals. It’s a mixture of odd ingredients but it comes together so well. Some of the usual suspects you might find in this stew include: hot dog franks, spam, baked beans, ground beef, bacon, rice cake, bean sprouts, ramyun, & a slice of cheddar cheese. This place gives you all that including it’s specialty, Jimny Dean breakfast sausage!
cold pickled cabbage – ice slushy kimchi
Korean coleslaw – with pineapple dressing & cherry tomato
the stew before it starts stewing
boiled down & ready for the ramyun
My favorite part about this particular budae-jjigae restaurant is the Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage. Also, the price is awesome. For 6,500won per person, you’ll get side dishes, stew, and a bowl of rice. That’s cheaper than the big chain “Nolboo.” Also, the soup here is slightly spicier and saltier – which I like.
Asuncion reclining on the stack of butt-mats after a full meal
My friend Asuncion first ate at this restaurant with some of her students for a class party. The restaurant also specializes in Shabu Shabu (which she ate the first time). She decided that we needed to come back because the waitress smiled at her hahaha. In conclusion (I feel like I’m writing a Junior Master essay, HA!), this is the cheapest budae-jjigae place I’ve found in Korea and by far, one of the best !
