Location: Itaewon (Seoul, South Korea)
How To Get There: Take the subway to (Line 6) Itaewon Station (이태원 역) and get out at Exit 1. Walk straight down the street for about 5 minutes and keep to your right. Original Pancake House is located underneath Coffee Smith & right above Agra.
I never thought much of this place when I lived back in the States. I would occasionally stop by when I was driving home from CSUF as a way to avoid traffic. But now that I live in Korea, it’s a treat anytime a US-based chain makes its way here! OPH has been in Korea since around 2013, with its first location in Sinsa. If I remember correctly, the Sinsa location is the first branch outside of the US. OPH has since expanded to Japan as well. The branch in Itaewon opened up around January of 2016.It replaced this Malaysian food buffet I used to go to back in the day.
The menu was filled with different types of pancakes, including a dutch apple pancake. The other big sellers were omelettes and crepes. I was slightly disappointed to see the lack of combo plates on the menu. When I eat breakfast, I usually want a bit of everything on my plate. I settled for potato pancakes and a salami hash (17,000원).
It took about 15 minutes for my food to come out. The plating was modest, with five silver dollar potato pancakes, a gravy boat of salami hash topped with two sunny side up eggs, and a side of sour cream for dipping. The potato pancakes were thin and crispy. Think mashed potatoes mixed into your pancake batter. The salami hash was decent as well. I could taste fresh onions and vegetables inside the hash. Personally, I prefer the corned beef hash at Butterfingers to this salami hash.
Overall, it was nice to finally try out this place after seeing it so many times. I went with my friends Erin & Lucas who were back in Korea on a TDY visit. We had to wait around 20 minutes for a table since we arrived just in time for the lunch rush. The food was good, but I sort of expected more from the experience. I felt like I was being fed a bunch of side dishes vs. one complete meal. I’d like to go back and try some other dishes here in the future, but for now, I think I prefer Butterfingers.
